ENGINEERING INDEX / ENTRY 13

CASE 13 / MEMORY / DEPENDENCY BOUNDARY

Recall should not vanish with an optional dependency.

A memory feature should have a basic path when optional semantic packages are unavailable. HackBot stores conversation turns and can recall matching text through its memory manager.

Source project: HackBotExploratory portability checkReviewed September 25, 2026
01 / THE ENGINEERING QUESTION

Can useful text memory remain available when semantic dependencies are absent?

02 / THE SYSTEM

Where the handoffs happen.

The portable path is exercised without semantic dependencies, and embedding serialization/similarity helpers are checked without NumPy.

  1. 01Store turns
  2. 02Keep portable embedding helper
  3. 03Recall text
  4. 04Return recent context
03 / THE CLAIM LEDGER

What the record earns.

Two portability checks passed; retrieval quality and retention are unmeasured.

Observed receipt
On September 25, 2026, both portable-memory tests passed within a 21-test HackBot batch.
Source and scope
HackBot persistent-memory manager and embeddings helpers, tests/test_persistent_memory_portable.py; inspected dirty checkout at HEAD 976d9e7.
04 / THE LIMIT

What this does not prove.

Two local tests do not establish long-term memory quality, relevance at scale, or safe retention of sensitive operator data.

05 / NEXT PROOF

Where the work goes next.

Measure retrieval usefulness and retention/deletion behavior on a safe fixture before presenting memory as an operational advantage.
