ENGINEERING INDEX / ENTRY 06
CASE 06 / LEARNING SYSTEMS / AUTHORITY BOUNDARY
The lesson can be imaginative. The grade cannot improvise.
A learning companion may make practice feel alive, but the child's mastery record needs a stable owner. Academy's Teacher Lab issues a question receipt, accepts one matching answer, and leaves scoring and progression to code. James set the design direction and tested this behavior.
How can a learning world stay engaging while progression remains deterministic and reviewable?
Where the handoffs happen.
The current practice path labels its scoring as deterministic. Stale or reused question receipts are rejected. Authored quests and lab badges can exist beside the lesson without changing mastery.
- 01Issue practice question
- 02Bind one-use receipt
- 03Score with code
- 04Update mastery and review
What the record earns.
42 Teacher Lab tests passed at the current clean Academy revision; three directly probe this boundary.
- Observed receipt
- The 42-test Teacher Lab core suite passed on September 28 at clean revision 64556b6. Three tests directly probe this boundary: deterministic code-owned practice/mastery, latest-only single-use question receipts, and authored experiences that do not change mastery.
- Source and scope
- Twilight Academy Teacher Lab runtime/store and tests/test_teacher_lab_core.py at clean commit 64556b625271b63af7068eb39726f69e9a7ee8e9. The selected synthetic assertions below show exactly what these tests establish.
Selected assertions from a local Teacher Lab fixture—not a child's record. The 42-test Teacher Lab file passed at clean Academy revision 64556b6.
- Question packet → scored_by == deterministic_code
- Five fixture answers → mastered == True; next_action == review_scheduled
- Stale or reused issue receipt → ValueError; attempt count remains one
- Authored quest/badge activity → mastery does not change

- What it does not show
- This is an excerpt of fixture assertions, not a complete public test log, learner journey, or evidence of educational effectiveness.
What this does not prove.
These tests establish specific local rules, not a completed family pilot, learning efficacy, or a guarantee about every curriculum and interface path.
Where the work goes next.
Pair a privacy-safe learner journey with an issued-question, scored-answer, and review-state trace; keep child data out of public artifacts.
